According to the Internet source given below, Peter Maxwell-Davies was born in Salford, now part of Greater Manchester. He studied music at the Royal Manchester College of Music and Manchester University. Together with Alexander Goehr, Harrison Birtwistle, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon he formed an ensemble called New Music Manchester ('The Manchester School') for contemporary compositions. His catalogue contains nearly 300 works in all genres. These include more than 60 orchestral scores, several stage works, choral, chamber and incidental music, there is a large body of educational material, designed for children of different ages, as well as many occasional pieces.
