Christoph Willibald Glück  (1714-87)
Last updated: 09.10.23
According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Christoph Willibald Glück was a German composer, born in Bavaria but possibly of Bohemian origin; travelled much - London, 1745; Paris, 1773-9, where his followers opposed those of Piccinni; settled and died in Vienna. Was consciously an operatic reformer, stressing importance of subordinating music to dramatic needs - and also dispensing with "dry recitative; his "Alkestis" (1767) has a famous preface expounding his ideas. This opera, like its predecessor "Orpheus", was originally in Italian; both were later revised, with French texts. Other operas include "Iphigenia in Aulis", "Iphigenia in Tauris", and "Armida", all in French. Wrote in all more than 45 stage works; also instrumental pieces, etc.
