Here in
Smiles and Chuckles with this adaptation for recorder quintet, the 1st tenor has plenty to smile and chuckle about having the literally breathtaking melodies more-or-less from start to finish. This great rag is in the form of AABBACC with a 4-bar introduction and interludes of 4- and 12-bars between the AC- and CC-strains respectively. The keys used are F and Bb. Only in the 12-bar interlude does the 1st tenor have some respite where the basses come to the fore. The great bass player also has the rare privilege of taking up a descant for the opening bar. The cover of the original sheet music shows happy one-stepping dancers - it also notes that this piece can be heard on Victor Record No. 18385.
