This is a fine "classic rag" of AABBCCDD form. Its 4-bar introduction is dramatic and sets the scene in keeping with the waterfall shown on the cover of the original sheet music. The B- and C-strains are especially evocative, the former suggesting a bubbling watery cascade whilst the latter a turbulent upwelling. Both are extremely difficult to play requiring meticulous tonguing to achieve the desired effect. For my taste, a minor masterpiece - a jewel of a composition!
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
Cataract was published by the Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
There is also a septet version of this item.
