An early work, Comus may be described as what "Perfessor" Bill Edwards once called an "almost rag". Published using her maiden name, Cal. Stark adopted the somewhat different form of AABBCDD with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude preceding the C-strain whereby the AB- and CD-strains are written in the keys of Bb and Eb respectively.
In Roman mythology, Comus was the god of mirth and revelry and a follower of Dionysus. In Milton's same-named masque, Comus, is the mischievous son of Bacchus and Circe. Whether this was in the composer's mind is left to the performers' interpretation. As can be seen from the roistering mythical figures illustrating the cover of the original sheet music, it can safely be assumed that the publisher knew all about Comus.
Comus was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
