Antonín Dvorák  (1841-1904)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Antonín Dvorák was a Czech composer; 1866-73 viola player in the Czech National Theatre orchestra, conducted by Smetana who influenced him; 1874, became a friend of Johannes Brahms. Wrote cantata "The Spectre's Bride" for use in England, which he visited 9 times. (Mus. D., Cambridge 1891). Director of the Prague Conservatory, 1891; director of the National Conservatory in New York, 1982-5. He wrote symphonies, dances and other works. These include concertos for piano, violin, cello as well as operas; Mass, Requiem, piano trios, string quartets, a piano quintet, piano pieces and many songs and part-songs.
