According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Marc-Antoine Charpentier was a French composer, pupil of Carrisimi in Rome; held church post in France and wrote Masses and other church music, and also operas, ballets, incidental music to plays by Molière (with whom he worked) and Racine, etc.
