Georges Bizet  (1838-1875)
Last updated: 17.12.23
According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Georges [Alexander César Léopold] Bizet was a French composer, born in Paris, pupil of Halévy, whose daughter he married after Halaévy's death. At 19 won prize for an operetta "Doctor Miracle"; later wrote operas including "Carmen" - at first only a moderate success; Bizet died three months after its first performance. His work, marked by its clarity and melodic gifts, was later championed by (e.g. by Nietzsche) as a counterblast to Wagner. It also includes incidental music to Daudet's play "L' Arlésienne"; symphony (written at 17 but not performed until 1935); suite "Children's Games" (originally for piano duet).
