From School Library Journal
Gr 2-6-While this book is primarily a collection of songs, it takes children through the process of learning to play the recorder, step-by-step. The proper method of holding the instrument is illustrated, as is how to make a decent-sounding tone. Some basic musical instruction is included as it is relevant to learning to play the instrument and to reading music. The songs are primarily traditional tunes ("Bingo," "Down in the Valley," "London Bridge," etc.), and are organized to complement the increasing skill levels presented. The general glossary and rhythm glossary will help students understand the terminology and concepts. A helpful fingering chart is appended. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate techniques and some of the songs. A personified metronome appears throughout, explaining different principles of musical notation.
