Publisher's blurb:
"Renaissance and Baroque".
This second volume in the Pelican History of Music is particularly concerned with the social and artistic environment during the two centuries associated with Renaissance and Baroque music. By the mid-fifteenth century the Church's monopoly of influence was gone; alonside its rites a wealth of courtly and civil occaisions demanded music and opened the way to every kind of experiment.
Europe knew no musical frontiers and it is possible to trace a whole pattern of influence and counter-influence: the motet, the chanson and the early opera are much alike in their regional forms and adaptations.
Towards the end ot the period the musician, like the artist, has become emencipated. Composers such as Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Purcell and the Bachs are as individually distinct as the works that make them famous".
