Barbara Cass-Beggs has a two-fold purpose in bringing together the folk songs in this
sea-to-sea collection: to keep them alive and to help Canadian children become more
aware of their heritage. Interspersed among the 32 songs is an easy-flowing commentary on the
music and the people who made that music: the loggers, the voyageurs, the coureurs-de-bois, the
fishermen, the sailors. Suggestions are given for musical instruments best suited to particular
songs and ideas for games. Many of the songs have both English and French words, some
have Indian and Eskimo words as well. Words and music. Delightfully illustrated. Barbara
Cass-Beggs is a graduate of the Royal Schools of Music, London and served as
vice-president of the Canadian Folk Music Society.
