Haere mai (Song of Welcome)
Last updated: 11.10.23
This is a most beautiful song which can be found in Solid Gold Maori Songs and is attributed to Sam Karetu. I used love accompanying Steffi Lubrich on my concertina whilst she sang it most movingly in Maori.
Luckily there are English lyrics by Sam Freedman which I assume reflects the Maori original. If that is the case, then the song is a marvellous welcome indeed as the happy person on the receiving end is greeted in a very flowery manner being compared with the sun and even a king!
