Length: approx. 3 mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor is doubled.
Trebor Jay Tichenor in his That American Rag: The Story of Ragtime from Coast to Coast speculates that because the cover of the original sheet music was signed by "R. Scott" a relative of Scott was involved in the Princess Rag. The cover is a quite plain affair being principally a portrait of a smiling young lady, more of a girl-next-door than a princess, and unembellished lettering. Tichenor also suggest that the title, had it have been Scott's may refer to the Princess Theatre in Aurora, Missouri, in his home territory. He concludes however that it was more likely that publisher John Stark titled the rag after a same-named St Louis theatre that featured ragtime. The rag itself is a jolly, light-hearted "classic" in AABBCCB form with a number of pleasing touches such as echoed phrases for both upper and lower voices and lovely little runs. Another Scott fun piece!
Princess Rag was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a quartet version of this item.
