Scrub Rags is a splendid rag which is as ragged as it gets. Its form is ABACD whereby the ACD- and B-strains are in the major keys of Eb and Bb respectively. Much syncopated, careful co-ordination between the melody voices is required to achieve the intended clipped effect. No repeats are given in the original piano score which needless to say can be remedied at will - the exciting D-strain is well worth another round. In this transcription for recorder sextet, the editor has not reproduced a few jarring bottom D's in bars 62 and 77. The cover of the original sheet music shows a grim Negress scrubbing away no doubt unhappy by being left out of the fun.
Scrub Rags was published by John Arnold Pub. Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
