Length: approx. 3¼ mins.
The cover of the original sheet music shows an idyllic tropical scene so perhaps this rag celebrates the good old Havana cigar and not the efforts Teddy Bear Roosevelt and his Rough-riders. Havana Rag was described in an exuberant Stark blurb as "Corrugated to a finish. Exhilarating!". Well, it certainly is exhilarating and ragged enough for this editor's taste. Its form is AABBACDC and it is written in the recorder players' favourite keys of Ab- and Db-major. In this adaptation for recorder quintet, the melodies are shared by the treble and 1st tenor whilst the rhythm section has the happy task of providing a solid backing along with a few moments of glory of their own. A great ensemble piece.
Havana Rag was published by Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
