Peaceful Henry was dedicated to
Chas. L. Johnson. Much recorded, it is amongst the best of slow drags and well deserves its popularity. The title is said to celebrate the convivial janitor of Hoffman's publishing house who is depicted on the front cover of the original sheet music as the driver of a two-wheel cart drawn by cow - an inside joke perhaps? A later edition by Whitney-Warner shows just the portrait of a smiling Negro in ai inset. Its form is AABBCCDCBB with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AABB- and CCDCBB-strains are written in the major keys of C and F respectively. A jolly composition that goes down equally well by audiences and performers!
