Alabama Slide delights with its bright and breezy melodies ornamented with tootling responses which, in this adaptation for recorder quintet, are made by all voices at different times making it a splendid ensemble piece. The melodies are shared between the treble and 1st tenor whilst the rhythm section have plenty to do. Its quasi sonata form is AABBACCA with a 4-bar introduction whereby the ABBA- and CCAA-strains are written in the major keys of F and Bb respectively. The cover of the original sheet music shows a handsome fox trotting pair, the youthful gentleman especially catches the eye with his wispy up-twirled moustache and monocle. How the devil those latter-day gents kept those optical instruments firmly in place whilst performing strenuous exercises such as fox-trotting is beyond this editor. Hats off to 'em I say!
