Length: approx. 3¾ mins. Sounds best if the 1st tenor and bass are doubled.
This is a fine "classic" rag in AABBACCDD form and for my taste not the least bit agitated except perhaps somewhat slightly in the D-strain. The other strains are very smooth with some very nice touches - I particularly like the bell-like phrases in the B-strain. This is all completely at odds with the cover of the original sheet music depicting a storm-tossed sea beating against a light-house with barely discernible ships under sail lying at improbable contradictory angles on the horizon. This all suggests that John Stark, the publisher, had a fine piece of artwork and unused title at hand awaiting a fitting composition - who knows?
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
Agitation Rag was published by the Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
There are also treble solo and trio versions of this item.
