Length: approx. 4½ mins. Sounds best with the 1st tenor doubled.
According to the cover of the original sheet music, Oh! You Devil was introduced by Aida Overton Walker billed as America's foremost coloured comedienne. The good lady herself is shown appropriately clad holding a trident to maltreat her clients. The rag itself is a splendid affair in the sonata form of AABBACCAA with a 4-bar introduction, a 4-bar interlude separating the CCAA-strains and a 6-bar coda. The whole is written in C-major. Not an easy piece for a recorder ensemble but very rewarding to master.
Oh! You Devil was published by Maurice Shapiro Music Publisher, New York, USA.
A tempo of 140 crotchets/min. is suggested.
