The Pinywoods Rag is just about as minimalistic as it gets. Devoid of an introduction, repeats, dynamics or ornamentation it is as simple as ABC which is also its form whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the keys of F and Bb respectively. For all of that that it charms with its directness and is a most happy composition. The cover of the original sheet music appropriately shows a dancer accompanied by a banjo player cavorting in the gaze of a ring of onlookers before a hut set in a pine wood. Another great fun piece to include in a programme dedicated to lady ragtimers!
The Pinywoods Rag was published by C.C. Cocroft Music Co., Thomasville, Georgia, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
