The cover of the original sheet music not only appropriately shows a pistol-packing cowboy but also proudly proclaims that this piece was "Played with Great Success by Sousa's Band". Western Life certainly has a Sousa feel about it. The march and two-step is a brisk, lively affair and comprises three distinct melodies written in the major keys of F and Bb. As an adaptation for recorder sextet, the melodies are shared by the treble and 1st tenor voices. A must for a recorder western programme!
Western Life was published by Charles I. Davis, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
