For whom the title of Treat 'em Rough was intended is lost in ragtime history but there is nothing rough about this polished composition. As an adaptation for recorder sextet, it is an all tenor/bass affair and here the bass voices are reminded not to overwhelm the tenors. Its form is AABBAACC with a 2-bar introduction whereby the G- and C-strains are written in the major keys of G and C respectively.
Treat 'em Rough was published in Melody by Walter Jacobs, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
A tempo of 100 crotchets/min. is suggested.
