Length: approx. 3 mins. Optional vocals (tenor) Words by Shelton Brooks:
The Darktown Strutters' Ball is an immensely popular evergreen which has been sung, recorded, performed and danced by millions down the generations since its composition way back in 1907. It is said that words and music were inspired by a ball that Brooks probably attended at the 1915 Pacific-Panama Exposition in San Francisco.
It has become a jazz standard that no self-respecting ensemble cannot afford to do without in their repertoire. This adaptation for recorder quintet is long overdue. All tenor and bass recorder aficionados will just love this!
The cover of the original sheet music show three dance pairs probably "Walking the Dog". Sophie Tucker, an early performer of this song, is shown in an inset.
The Darktown Strutters' Ball was published by
Leo Feist, New York, USA.
A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
