Jean Schwartz  (1878-1956)
Last updated: 02.05.17
Jean Schwartz was an American songwriter of Hungarian descent born in Budapest. His family emigrated to New York when he was 13 years old. His music career started in department stores where he sold and demonstrated sheet music before taking full-time employment in the Shapiro-Bernstein Publishing House as a pianist and song-plugger. Although his first published composition, Dusky Dudes (1899), was a cakewalk he went on to become a lyricist of some standing. He formed a partnership with William Jerome which lasted from 1901 to 1913 during which they produced many songs for Broadway and Zigfield Follies. Their biggest hit was the Chinatown, My Chinatown (1910). He wrote a number of rags of which The Whitewash Man (1908) and April Fool Rag (1911) are probably the best known. Jean Schwartz died in Los Angeles, California.
In common with many of his contemporaries he also used a pseudonym namely Howard Lipson.
