According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was a Russian Composer, also conductor; member of the "nationalist group of composers called "The Mighty Handful". In early life was a naval officer, and picked up much of his musical techniques after being appointed at the St Petersburg Conservatory, 1871. His compositions usually have some literacy or other extra-musical idea behind them and are distinguished by rich orchestration: he wrote a textbook on orchestration with examples entirely from his own work. Wrote operas, 3 symphonies, piano concertos, folk-song arrangements.
