According to Helmut Mönkmeyer in the foreword to his Cinco Canciones (1557), neither the year of Thomas Créquillon's birth nor that of his death is known, but the latter may well have been 1557, in which year about three thousand inhabitants of Béthume, where Créquillon was living, were carried off by the plague.
The number of Créquillon's printed and hand-written works which have been preserved is very large. they include almost two hundred motets and masses. Créquillon was esteemed by his contemporaries as one of the finest composers of the day, a fact indicted by, for example, the appearance of his music in many tablature books and by the great popularity of "Un gay bergier".
