Almost nothing is known about Euphemia Allen other than that she hailed from Britain and as a 16-year old, composed the timeless, infamous and maddening The Celebrated Chop Waltz
. It was her only work which was published under the pseudonym of Arthur de Lulli (sometimes spelled de Zulli). It is said however to have inspired Alexander Borodin
to compose variations on the theme for his daughter Gania. Together with Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov
and some other Russian composers, the variations were finally published as "Paraphrases on the Cutlet Polka".
An ideal subject for a trivial pursuits session!
