I bought my copy in the late 70s, and still rely on it constantly. This is THE best dulcimer book to get, as a first book and as one you'll return to again and again. In it Jean Ritchie, who is pretty much the mother of the last 20 yrars of the dulcimer revivals, explains how to tune the dulcimer for all of the various modes, not just the 2 or 3 most common ones. She also has songs using each of the modes, ones simple enough for beginners and interesting enough for experienced players.
This is traditional dulcimer playing, using a noter for melody & the open strings as drones. For detailed information on chording, check out other books. But if you want to know how to play those songs that are in other keys/modes than mixolydian and ionian, and/or want a good, complete, basic book (for learning and for reference), this one is it! Jean's book include pictures, history and other information too, print is a comfortable size & the music is written out large enough to see & read easily while playing.
