This biography of Australian parliamentarian Peter Andren tells the story of an intelligent and sensitive man who became a politician because he could see that the values he held and the people he cared for had been abandoned by the major parties. Andren's run as an independent and his capture of the federal seat of Calare in central-western New South Wales in 1996 is detailed. His third victory in 2001, which he secured with an amazing majority of the vote, is also discussed, as is how Andren accomplished all of this in a rural electorate, without the benefit of a party organization, and while holding views that are to the left of the Labor, Liberal, and National Parties.
