Publisher's blurb:
Although he was an organist for the celebrated St. Thomas Church from 1561-1695, and was three times published during his lifetime, Elias Nicolaus Ammerbach is virtually unknown today. This edition comprises a transription, from the original tablature notation, of his orginal 1571 and 1583 publications as well as three compositions from 1575. All correct variant readings are incorporated into the transcription. The music of 1571 and 1583 consists of settings of sacred and secular German melodies--precursors of the Baroque keyboard chorale-prelude--and a rich variety of dances, as well as transcriptions of arrangements for keyboard by other composers, some unique to this collection. Ammerbach's intabulations provide useful information about late-Renaissance ornamentation and formal techniques. The music as a whole affords significant insight into sixteenth-century German musical life..
